NO MORE FREEBIES!
No more freebies like this lavish table of free items.
NO. MORE. FREEBIES!
Yes, you read that right: the Senior Sooner no longer is offering FREEBIES!
Why, you ask?
Because it's MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! My goal finally has been realized!
Sooner Nation's tremendous showing at the Palace for the playoffs proves OU has a definite home field advantage! And that's been a life-long ambition of mine.
Dean George L. Cross who built a university the football team could be proud of.
You see, this is how I began nearly 60 years ago when Dean George L. Cross selected me for a taskforce that was asked to liven up Owen Field to give OU a home field advantage.
Even before the Gomer Jones years, Sooner fans were fairly quiet conaseurs of the game, ala opera buffs, with golf claps and "bravos," thanks mostly to Prof. Bud's innovative coach's TV show where Wilkinson in effect taught Football Theory 101 for free to Sooner Nation.
Dean George L. Cross
With Jim Mackenzie having revived the program, Dean Cross, who once said he wanted to build a university the football team could be proud of, desired a home field advantage and gathered students from across campus life for ideas.
Mine was to give the cheerleaders an amplifier like the little one so rudely used by the dude up the hall in my dorm who played his electric guitar when I'm trying to study. It's small, I said, but the amp and microphone would be better than their megaphones. (This is why, though, I often wear a miniature megaphone.)
What does all this have to do with no more freebies, you ask?
Well, when T.B.O.W. betrayed the all-time greatest program -- and bidenomics cost me my season tickets -- the Senior Sooner sprang into action. Brent Venables challenged Sooner Nation to make the Palace a nightmare for visiting teams, and I for one accepted.
Unable to attend games, at Coaches Corner on Lindsay near the Palace the late Lady Sarah and I started giving out freebies to bribe people to cheer like champions. And over the past two seasons the free items grew to include earrings, buttons, pompons, coasters, flags, pinwheels, caps, headbands, pens, keychains, patches, ornaments and bookmarks.
Each time an item was given, recipients were told to "CHEER LIKE A CHAMPION" in answer to Brent's challenge. It was the best I could do with my limited resources.
My new goal is to generate greater appreciation and support for OU's gymnastics, women's basketball and softball programs. They represent the university extremely well but don't get nearly the recognition they deserve, despite bringing home impressive hardware 🏆.
I'll attend gymnastics and basketball games when my tight budget and failing health allow. Meanwhile, OU women's sports are worthy of our wholehearted support, so please cheer like a champion without having to be bribed.
